Introduction to the use of the BLAST+ command-line applications

The Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) is widely used to search for sequence similarities. Both amino acid and nucleic sequences are generally investigated by using webservers, such as the NCBI and the UniProt databases. By using command-line applications it is possible to perform BLAST searches locally. This gives the possibility to accomplish multiple BLAST analysis in shorter time. Additionally, by changing selected parameters, it is possible to better define searching experiments according to the user needs.

During this 2 days basic-course, the participant will be introduced to the use of the BLAST+ for local searches, including the installing of the BLAST+ suite and the making of personalized databases. Participants are supposed to bring their own computers.
