Psilocybin is the name of the strongly hallucinogenic substance that is responsible for the "magic" in magic mushrooms. Since its discovery, scientists have wondered why the mushrooms of the genus Psilocybe produce this substance. The team around Professor Dirk Hoffmeister and ILRS doctoral researcher Claudius Lenz examined the blue discoloration of the fungus after an injury and provided an explanation for the formation of psilocybin, as reported in the renowned journal "Angewandte Chemie".
